With over ten years’ experience in terminal operations for Intercruises, Robert is our Port Delivery Team Manager in Barcelona. He gave us the low down of what it takes to be part of the team…
Hi Robert, can you give us an idea of the kind of candidates Intercruises looks for to join their operations teams?
Despite our teams being very multicultural and diverse in many ways – they all share a passion for the travel industry, their destinations and our guests. We look for hard-working, outgoing and smiley professionals, who take pride in representing both the Intercruises brand and our cruise line clients. They need to be good team players, have good problem-solving skills and be able to easily adapt to changing situations. All candidates must have a good level of English (and the local language), and a valid work permit for the country. A lot of our operations take place over the weekend, so it’s a great option for candidates who are looking for a flexible role to fit around their busy schedules.
What roles are on offer?
There are many different positions involved in our turnaround operations. Our teams take care of everything from checking-in guests and their luggage, to pointing them in the right direction and keeping guest traffic orderly throughout the terminal. We get to interact a lot with our guests (while of course maintaining social distancing rules), who tend to be in full-holiday mode, so it’s always a fun and high-energy environment to be in.
Do the teams receive training?
Yes, all team members undergo thorough training programs prior to joining the team. Our global Learning & Development team work hard to keep our in-house training programs up-to-date and in line with the latest industry trends. These programs have been very well designed and are absolutely key to making sure our service standards remain consistent around the world, while keeping our teams and guests as safe as possible.
Our turnaround operations are tailored to meet the individual needs of each cruise line, so we regularly organize dress rehearsals the day before, where our teams come in uniform and act out role play exercises to prepare them for the big day. It’s always a fun way for our teams to break the ice, familiarize themselves with the technology we use and embrace our winning team spirit – we can never be too prepared in this industry.
How have operations been affected since the outbreak of the pandemic?
There have been some big changes, but nothing we can’t handle. We have very strict health & safety protocols in place when working in the port. All candidates will be fully briefed and prepared before they begin working with us and will also receive great ongoing support from the team leaders.
Do you assign certain roles to certain candidates?
Yes we do! We take the skillset and experience of each candidate into consideration when assigning the roles before our operations. Some people might be better at working with technology while others may have great language skills – we only assign roles if we feel it’s a good fit, and if it’s where we think they will shine the most.
How do candidates apply?
The easiest way is to send your CV and letter of motivation to i.intercruises@intercruises.com. Candidates should include the port they’d like to work in, as their CVs will be forwarded to our local recruitment teams who will be in touch when vacancies become available. Come and join our Intercruises family!
